9/11 Merkin Waterfall Tribute

If you are reading this, I am impressed and will keep this brief but with editorial comments to help the future of F3

Warmups – SSH x25, squat Jacks x 10, Willie Mays x 10 count, Mountain Climbers x 20, Plank Jacks x 20, 1/2 burpees x 20

Indian Run to Overton Park in 3 separate groups with 40 sumo squats worked in.  Safety measures were observed for the safe passage of pax across intersections.

At Overton Park – clock merkins x 10 at each time (12, 3, 6, 9) x 2 (80 merkins total with abs in between)

We attempted clock situps and it was a fail – pax sliding down the hill, awkward arms, legs, just a total fail – will not do again.  For 2nd round, we did Flutter kicks x 10 at 12 o’clock, and 20 at 6 o’clock

Moved to Overton Road across the street, Lunged down the hill and Tim Hendricks (crawlbear) back up the hill – this was very hard so did not repeat.  2nd round was lunge downhill, forward bear crawl/crab walk back up.

Buddy mosey back to the park while sharing prayer requests during the mosey.  If you are still reading this, the thing that keeps me coming back to F3 is the bond among the men – the only way to make that meaningful is to allow times to actually share our lives with eachother.  Forced sharing is so important for us men as we do not share if given the choice not to – done with editorializing now.

The Vulcan

Here is a recap of the crazy 31 Flavors workout at the Vulcan. Following a record turnout from the pre-workout ruck, several PAX helped YHC get this overly elaborate shenanigan setup. 31 cones were in place in 2 long parallel lines (designed to make conversation easier during this circuit type workout). Before each cone lay an index card indicating the exercise to be performed and workout tool. Tools included dumbbells, a round river rock, jump ropes, kettle bells, a burpee stick, a ruck plate, a pumpkin, etc.

Following a short warm-up (Arnold says: must take care of the shoulders) and a two-lap mosey of the park track, 35 PAX set up on the cone-marked workout stations. We definitely looked like a bunch of crazies trying to save money by avoiding a gym membership. Perhaps we are. At the end of the long rows of stations was the command position – the simple squat station. The guy on the squat station controlled the tempo as PAX were instructed to perform their stations exercise until commanded to MOVE by the man on the squat station.

And that’s how it went down. PAX rotated clockwise to the next station on command to move and save for a few begged for (really) “20 counts” the fun went non-stop until the clock ran out. And yes… YHC played music. You’ve got to have music for a stationary F3 workout (that should be a top 10 rule). As some PAX have already explored, the more unexpected the music – the better (call it part of the “pain”).

I haven’t seen a large group of PAX laughing so much in a while. This workout has a touch of the ridiculous. Hopefully, there was profitable work in it as well. Name-o-rama…FNG naming (welcome Bumble Bee, Mr. Ed and Rambler)…a couple of announcements including an upcoming charity run…and Blue Angel closed things out with a prayer.

31 Flavors, or Gloom’s Gym, or whatever it is to be called, this madness will be improved upon and reprised as it was – at least to YHC – a fun change of pace.

THE SWITCHBACK
At the Amp and starting a the end of the first row of seating, we bear crawled ALONG THE NARROW STONE SEAT (not in the wider grass walkway / burr minefield) to the end of first row, up to the second row and back and forth to the top – like a switchback road.  What made this more challenging is that we intentionally tackled it single file as a PAX of 21.  This meant that you could only go as fast as the men in front of you were moving, which prolonged the amount of time in the bear crawl position.  PAX instructed to SSH at the top while waiting for the six.  Weinke had “rinse and repeat?” written next, but one trip on The Switchback was enough for this day.

Decline Merkins before leaving the Amp, as we can’t pass up the opportunity to use the stage wall for work.

Welcome to FNG Bird Dog.  We are pleased to have him.  Thank you to Schilling and Marion Barry who have stepped up and are co-Qing on Tuesday.  If you are following Twitter you already know a beat-down by Banjo (who flew in from F3 Cary Apex in NC) is planned for 0700 on Saturday.  As for YHC, The Switchback made it a tough workout.  Thank you to everyone who came out to get better on this day.

17 Men Brave Birmingham’s 1st Weekday Morning

Economists call strong consumer enthusiasm after a recession or depression: pent up demand. Alabama lands F3 after NC, SC, GA, FL, LA, TX, TN, MS…and several other states. There were 20 PAX at the launch on Saturday and only three days later at 0530 an inspiring showing of 17 men posting – 5 FNGs. Impressive. The demand is here…and it’s on.

“BELLE ISLE” (ancestral home of Fletch in “Fletch Lives”)
At the large pond-shaped, rust colored play top that looks like a bit to YHC like a toxic marshland (Belle Isle) we paired off. While one man makes TWO round trip sprints across the toxic marsh and back, his partner does flutter kicks to kick off the toxic mud from his high tops.
REPEAT 5 TIMES (10 round trip sprints per man). A bit of a smoker for most of us.
